Can I turn my ceiling fans lights off at the wall switch without turning off the fan?

 

Of Course you can, but it has to be wired correctly. Above your ceiling fan is a junction box. It should have a

• "hot" wire,
• "cold wire",and
• two wires from the switch.

If you run the hot wire and cold wire directly as requested by the ceiling fan manufacturer, then the wall switch must be in the on position for either the fan blades to turn or the lights to come on. However, if you wire the "hot" supply wire directly to the incoming "hot" wire for the blades and the wire for the lights too the switch, then you can turn on the ceiling fan from the ceiling fan switch and turn the lights on and off at the wall switch without affecting the ceiling blades.
